A feature in Gourmet magazine on the classic New Orleans neighborhood restaurant attracted tourists and even celebrities, like Bob Hope and Muhammad Ali. But the unassuming Dunbar’s, with its sweet tea and all-you-could-eat lunches, remained primarily a gathering place for New Orleanians.
The year after hurricane Katrina, Dunbar’s relocated to the cafeteria of the Loyola University Law School. The food was still wonderful, but the feeling was not the same.
In 2008, it looked like Dunbar’s would return to its Freret Street location, but those plans fell through.

Dunbar’s left the Loyola Law School’s cafeteria in 2012.
Dunbar’s in Gert Town, has similar offerings to the original at breakfast and lunch with an expanded menu for dinner.
Gert Town has been the new home and feels great, says the staff. While being a part of the television show “Restaurant Impossible”, Dunbar’s underwent a complete makeover, which is evident by its vibrant new look.
